When I first came to Connecting Families Ally would spend most the day in her room. She often had what she called bad days where she would not even feel like cooking for herself. She would keep microwave meals in the freezer for when she was too depressed to cook and buy more every week as she used them.
I spent quite a bit of time getting to know Ally over the first few weeks and learned that she really enjoyed cooking and planning to cook. I spoke with Ally about changing how we shop and cook each week. We set aside a day where Ally and the other residents would sit down and plan out a menu for the week. Then Ally with the assistance of staff would plan out the shopping list. Ally slowly became in charge of the menu and cooking the dinners in the house.
As time past Ally had more and more of reason to come out of her room. She interacted with staff more often, even critiquing staff’s cooking. I believe it gave her a purpose and a feeling that she contributed to the house. Behaviours of concern dropped off over time and it has been months since she has bought a microwave meal.

We recently began supporting Tommy at our new Gold Coast house. Tommy had previously been under care of two other NDIS providers over the last 12 months. Both of these placements ended with Tommy in the hospital for a long period of time. Neither of those placements was pleasurable to Tommy or his brother Terry.
When I first met Terry I could see how dedicated he was to his bother’s care. However, after the last two placements he did not expect this one would end up much different, but he was willing to give us a chance. Thankfully the whole team worked together to give us the best shot of making this placement a success.
After the holidays met with Terry to see how he felt about the care his bother was receiving. Terry let me know that Connecting Families had exceeded all of his expectations. Tommy is well looked after and he feels he can take a step back. Terry trusted us enough that he took his first holiday in years last week.
